Hannan is a Cornerstone School
The Muscogee County School District is implementing a new literacy
initiative—Cornerstone. Cornerstone is a research-based literacy program that
has been proven to improve reading and language arts achievement. All Muscogee
County elementary schools are gradually being phased into this framework.
During the 2009-2010 school year, Hannan is considered to be a first year
Cornerstone school.
Ask your child/children about "schema," making connections between "text and
self," "text and text," and "text and world," and "visualization." These are all
Cornerstone strategies which aid the reader to better comprehend what he/she is
reading. Encourage your child to tell you about some of the components of a
Cornerstone lesson--"crafting" (students are seated on the carpet), "turn and
talk," and "composing meaning." Since it is the goal of all our stakeholders
(parents, students, teachers, and the community) to improve instruction and
learning, we sincerely hope that you will come on board with this established
literacy project.
